Companionship towards well-being of elderly in old age homes
Venue: Calcutta Rowing Club, Southern Avenue, Kolkata
Debjiban Mukherjee - Associate Manager, Corporate Finance, Apeejay Surrendra Group
You had conducted the open quiz for senior citizens of Dignity Foundation. Their biggest so far! What made you volunteer for this companionship event for the elderly?
I have a passion for quizzing. I have been active in the quiz circuit since school days. Though time is a constraint now, but the passion rears its head every now and then and drives me to the quizzes. When this opportunity came, it appealed to me on two counts - it will be a unique experience to conduct an informal quiz for the elderly, something I haven’t come across. Also considering the participants, the format and questions was a challenge. And above all it was a great opportunity to give back to society. Secondly, I have mostly been a participant but becoming a quiz master was a rare experience. The scope to do what I love gave me the impetus to take up this activity.

When you first came to know of this volunteering opportunity, what inspired you to take it up?
When I first heard of it, I realized that the main purpose of this opportunity was to provide some basic ideas on pricing and cost of a product, which I had learnt during my college days. Thus I thought, if I could use my knowledge to serve a cause, work with people and bridge their knowledge gap, solve a problem, it would definitely be an exciting personal growth avenue and an enjoyable experience for me. You have been a part of two medical missions of Mission Smile where free surgeries were provided to patients suffering from cleft lips and palate. We wanted to know what inspired you to volunteer for this opportunity?
Firstly, I am thankful to the ISR™ team for giving me the opportunity to volunteer for two successive medical missions for Mission Smile. When I was asked to be a part of this activity, I readily agreed to it as I was curious to witness and write about the transformation of the people born with cleft lips and palate. It is always a satisfactory experience to do something, however little, for the underprivileged and less fortunate people of the society. Read More...
